Up the Elevala with Sam Kepuknai
Sam is a world-famous bird guide from Kiunga in Papua New Guinea. Here we are on the Elevala, a branch of the Fly River, where he has simple but comfortable accommodation for birders, the Ekamé Lodge. It is surrounded by exotic birds such as Southern Crowned Pigeon, Palm Cockatoo, Vulturine Parrot, Little Paradise and Hook-billed Kingfishers, Blue-breasted and Hooded Pittas, Blue Jewelbabbler, Flame Bowerbird, Twelve-wired and King Birds of Paradise and many more. the best site uk adult singles new wide choice

This wilderness is not far from the West Papuan border. If you enlarge the picture you can see that three of the party are women, one of them of 86 years. They thought that this country with the terrible reputation was one of the most wonderful places they had ever visited.

AABirding will be touring with Sam in April and again in August/September 2004.

To encourage people to save their surrounding habitat we like to help conserve the areas we visit by hiring local indigenous guides and staying in locally owned lodgings where possible. This gives the local land owners a direct reason for conserving their heritage. The lodgings range from comfortable to luxury but are mainly in the hotel-motel-lodge range.

At Kumul Lodge in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
Here is one of our guides, First John, or Paouli as he prefers to be called,
with his 9 year son Gibson, at Kumul Lodge, 2850m a.s.l.
Paouli is the local name of the Crested Bird of Paradise.
They are looking at the Schefflera feeding trees that the Papuan Lorikeets
(both morphs) and Ribbon-tailed Astrapias come to, most evenings.
Gibson is giving the "nice one" signal. The shoulder of Mt Hagen is just visible through the gap above the driveway.
